Privacy policy

Chit is an order pad. This policy is short because the app does very little with your data on purpose.

What Chit stores

The tickets you write: the ink, the typed reading of each line, table numbers, seat numbers, and the times a ticket was opened and closed. Your personal shorthand and any menu you paste in. Your settings. All of it is stored in the app on your phone.

What Chit sends

Nothing about your tickets. There is no Chit account and no Chit server. We cannot see what you write because it never reaches us.

Three things do use the network:

• The handwriting model. On first launch, the app downloads an English handwriting recognition model from Google's servers, because the recognition engine inside the app is Google's ML Kit. This is a one-time download of model files. After that, recognition runs entirely on your phone, and it never sends Google anything you wrote. On iPhone we also switch off the engine's own usage statistics. On Android that engine reports usage to Google through a channel it gives us no way to turn off, so on Android it sends Google technical information about its own operation, together with a random identifier for the installation. That is Google's collection, not ours, it is described in Google's own privacy policy, and it never contains any part of a ticket.
• Purchases. The yearly subscription is handled by Apple's App Store or Google Play. They process the payment and know that you bought Chit. We receive no payment details.
• Crash reports. If Chit crashes or hits an error it cannot handle, it sends a report so we can fix it. The report describes the failure: where in our code it happened, your phone's model and operating system version, and the app version. It carries no part of any ticket, no screenshot, no recording of your screen, no name, no email, no account, no advertising identifier, and no IP address. We use Sentry to receive these, and a report is deleted after 90 days.

What Chit collects about you

Nothing that identifies you. No name, no email, no location, no contacts, no photos, no advertising identifier, and no analytics on how you use the app. Chit does not track when you open it or what you tap.

The one exception is the crash report above, and it is built so that it cannot identify you or your phone. We strip the IP address before the report is stored, and we keep only the fields that help us read the error: the phone model, the operating system version and the app version. A crash report cannot be tied back to you, to your restaurant, or to an earlier report from the same phone. The App Store privacy label declares it as crash data, not linked to you.

Your device backup

If your phone backs up to iCloud or Google, the backup may include Chit's data, the same way it includes any app's data. That backup is yours, encrypted by Apple or Google, and we have no access to it.

Deleting your data

Delete a ticket in the app, or delete the app and everything goes with it. There is nothing to delete on our side.

Children

Chit is a work tool for restaurant staff and is not directed at children under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it and the new text is here.
